MTHQ was the grateful recipient last night of R. Salmon’s latest selection of tunes. And true to form the playlist did not disappoint, with songs from a plethora of artists and musical genres alike.
While the quality of tracks on show made it very difficult to pick out any band/artist that stood above the rest – however, one outfit that drew particular attention were Swedish four piece Little Dragon.
Why do I like Little Dragon? For a start I like their name, it reminds me of that cute little red pokemon – Charmeleon I believe it was called. Then there are the husky vocals of lead singer Yukimi Nagano, which when matched with the efficient clean production, creates a sound that makes Please Turn such an enjoyable song. Electronic pop at its finest.
Over the years a lot of great things have come out of Sweden; IKEA, meatballs and Freddie Lungberg to name but a few. And on judgment of Urban Cone’s first release “Urban photograph” I reckon they may just have another. Urban Cone have a cool quirkiness about them that is so familiar with the Nordic lands. And whilst they may look like the lovechild of Ulrika Johnson and the lead singer of the Kooks, they have an undeniably great sound.
